What is Wellness?

What is Wellness?

One definition of wellness I found described the word as: an approach to healthcare that emphasizes preventing illness and prolonging life, as opposed to emphasizing treating diseases.

Wellness is a full and complex merge of the physical, mental and spiritual well-beings. It is a true relationship that leads to quality of life.

Wellness has seven dimensions. Each dimension contributes to your sense of wellness or your quality of life, and each affects and overlaps the others. At times one may be more prominent than others. We do know if you neglect any one dimension for any length of time this has adverse effects on your overall health. The seven dimensions are: Physical, Emotional, Intellectual, Social, Spiritual, Environmental and Occupational. This is a lot of responsibility for one person to balance, especially in these unprecedented times of a pandemic.

Wellness is an individual pursuit and although we have a responsibility for our healthy choices it is also significantly influenced by the physical, social and cultural environments in which we live.

Wellness is a term that is so many times is confused with the words - health, wellbeing and happiness. While there are common elements among these words, wellness stands on its own by not referring to a static state of being. In other words health, wellbeing and happiness are certainly a state of being. Wellness is associated with the action of being aware and making choices where the focus is toward an outcome of health and wellbeing.

To look at all seven dimensions of wellness it would open an entire lecture - so for the purpose of these trying times we live in I would encourage you to certainly look perhaps focus on a concept of self-care for the purpose of your wellness.
